Callie is a happy, silly, bouncy, fun and social 2 year old Chocolate Lab mix who loves to cuddle and play. We have been fostering and rehabilitating her since September. She is now spayed, up-to-date on her shots, potty trained, crate trained, 90% leash trained (She still tries to walk in front of us and pulls a bit if you let her or when she gets excited) and now knows the meaning of over 30 commands, phrases and other random words! She is an active girl who loves to go for walks, run around with us in yard and swim when she has the chance. She appreciates, values and downright craves human interaction and affection, however she must be leashed and heavily supervised when around children because she does not understand that she cannot interact with children the same way that she does with adults. She absolutely loves cats! She has NEVER shown any kind of aggression or intent to do harm toward humans of any age, gender, race, etc. about anything including her bones, rawhides, treats, food/food bowl or toys of any kind.
Her feelings toward other dogs vary greatly though. . . we have learned that her acceptance of and reaction to another dog depends heavily on the other dog. Callie is somewhat dominant and has a high level of energy around dogs, so, if the other dog is mostly calm and submissive, friendly, playful and tolerant of Callie's enthusiasm and excitement, then she will be ok with it. However, if the other dog starts barking or jumping at her or showing aggression toward her in any way, even from father away, Callie will immediately become apprehensive, cautious, nervous and sometimes even defensive before the other dog even gets close to her.
On May 4th, "Ziggy" came to live with us so she is now getting first-hand experience sharing her home with another dog. I must say, it has been the best learning experience for Callie since she came to us! It took her about a week to adjust to him being here, but now all of her apprehension, cautiousness and nervousness about him have subsided and she is now (re)learning vital doggy social behaviors and interaction skills from him. Since Ziggy has been here, we have learned that Callie has no territory issues (not even with her crate), no jealousy with regards to getting attention from people and genuinely likes having a doggy friend in the home to play with. She still has some learning to do about interacting and living with other dogs, but all in all, she continues to make great strides!
After fostering and rehabilitating this wonderful girl for the last 9 months, Callie is a very happy, social and lovable dog now! We want to find her the perfect possible home and family, so I have taken the time to write up a 7 page "handbook" detailing her full history, what she was like when she first came to us, what her rehabilitation included, everything we have learned about her since she was brought to us and a full list of the commands, phrases and the other random words she has learned. I will gladly e-mail this information to anyone who is interested in learning more about Callie, as well as answer any questions you may have and send more pictures if requested! We are asking a small adoption fee of $100 to ensure that she goes to a proper home.
Our recommendations for her forever home are as follows:
? When we think of the perfect home for Callie, we imagine her happiest with a single person, couple or family with older children that likes walking or jogging, being outside, maybe spending time at a dog friendly lake and is looking for a cuddle buddy, activity partner and faithful companion that is happy, friendly, (mostly) quiet and super loving!
? She would do much better in a home that doesn't have lots of chaos, like having bunches of people coming and going all the time or having big parties every weekend, since she tends to get overly excited easily.
? She learns fast, but can be a bit stubborn at times, so she would do best with a person that is not afraid to take charge and give firm, yet positive commands and corrections if needed. . . especially when small children are around.
? She definitely needs a home with kids over 12 (or none at all) due to her bouncy nature, rough play and lack of ability to distinguish between how to interact with a 5 year old and how to interact with a 15 year old.
? She would do great in a home with cats, as long as they are dog friendly, and it would be best if they like to play. . . a lot.
? Because of how she plays with her kitty friend, she should probably not go to a home with small caged pets unless they are kept in a part of your home that Callie would not have access to. Otherwise she may try to get them out to play with them and could possible hurt them.
? Since we don't know how she will react to any kind of farm animal (smaller or larger than her), I would not recommend this type of new home for her for the safety of both Callie and the farm animals.
? Living with another dog(s) in the home would indeed be possible... as long as the other dog has no dog aggression of its' own, is playful, friendly and is at least 50lbs or larger (She may accidentally hurt a dog that is smaller than her by playing too rough with it.). They should also be supervised when they play together because Callie tends to play rough, they should not be left alone in another room together until you feel confident that there won't be a problem and they should be separated every time you leave the house. . . Just in case. They must also eat out of separate bowls away from each other to avoid any food aggression.
Maybe with more time, Callie will become more relaxed around other dogs, but only time will tell. Callie is dominant though, so to avoid fights, food aggression, toy and treat guarding and other dominance issues, ANY DOG SHE INTERACTS WITH OR LIVES WITH MUST BE SUBMISSIVE!!!
